I get home, open the front door, throw my bag and jacket in the corner and simply lay down on the sofa to start out with. My apartment looks like a wild party had taken place the night before and no one had cleaned up afterwards. Nothing but disorder.
I’m not doing very well at the moment. There are so many things that I should do, but I don’t know where to start. I am not able to pull myself together, get up, and deal with the disorder.
It occurs to me that the condition of my apartment often reflects the condition of my heart. When I’m doing well and everything is in order, then my apartment is also orderly and clean. If I’m doing badly, I let myself fall into a passive state, and my apartment is also disorderly and dirty.
The key moment of change is often a conversation with God. In prayer my life begins to take a turn in a positive direction. I consciously invite God in and give him control over my life. The situation doesn’t change right away, but my focus changes and order begins to be restored in my heart and also simultaneously in my apartment.
My parents run a small farm in the mountains. A while ago I was given the chance to take over the night watch for a cow who was just about to give birth. It was my job to stay by the cow in the stall and to call my parents as soon as I could see the calf. The time was finally at hand at 2 in the morning when I saw a hoof of the little calf’s . I called my parents, and they rushed to come and help me.
It was a moving moment when the calf left its mother’s womb and began to breathe. New life emerged. I experienced it as a holy and godly moment in time. I realized that there had to be someone who created life. Someone who had breathed the breath of life into us.
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
After Jesus ascended into heaven, his disciples returned to Jerusalem and gathered together in the house where the last supper with Jesus had taken place. Together with several women, they formed a close community, prayed, and waited for God to send the Holy Spirit as he had promised.
Do you know what or who that was?
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 14:26
Then it happened suddenly! Exactly 10 days after Jesus returned to heaven, the disciples experienced an extraordinary experience. At 9 in the morning they heard a loud rushing wind that came from heaven and filled the house. Flames like tongues of fire appeared over the heads of the disciples, and they started to speak in different languages. This experience marked the coming of the Holy Spirit.
If you’re walking with Jesus, then the Holy Spirit, ‘the Helper’ as Jesus called him, lives in you!
Do you know this Helper personally? Would you like to get to know him?
